WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE
Smart Business Cards Rabbit Hole
I saw these a few years ago, but they didn't work with older phones. Now those older phones are probably gone, and this "Smart" business card has electronics in it and when you hold it up to someone's phone (Apple or Android) it takes them to a page that you control. You make make a page for free (and personally I hate these "link trees" but I could set it up for them to click one button go to my website. I first looked at V1CE (vice) and they have nice stuff. Tappy Card was less expensive, but fairly basic. Then I found Linq, and they have Apple watch bands, cards, dots, and their prices were affordable (you figure a box of business cards is going to run between $30-$50 and then shipping). Now granted, you need to be in front of people. I'm going to talk to libsyn about getting a hub for the next trade show booth.
So after ordering my card from Linq with my custom logo to the tune of $44.72, I found a video that said, "Before you buy..."(isn't that always the case). It turns out I could order $10 of these NFC cards for $9 on Amazon and an NFC Tools app for $3
If I wanted my Logo on the card, I could buy 55 clear stickers and be out $55 (for a total of $74, so maybe I just want the card).
I do realize this is very much a "shiny object" and I don't need it, but it might make you stand out a bit. I love that Linq has a badge (which just screams conferences).
The Vice Card an NFC Card (Just tap someone's phone and it takes them to your follow/subscribe page). NFC is Near Field Communication (think Apple pay). At $55 this could be handy for trade shows (when we can go), or anytime you're some place with people. Check Out Video
Joe From Stacking Benjamins Has a New Book
Joe Saul Sehy from Stacking Benjamins (who has appears on the School of Podcasting multiple times) has a new book called, Stacked: Your Super-Serious Guide to Modern Money Management. It is also available on Audible
Louis CK Has A New Special
Louis (That's OK I don't need to shake your hand) CK the once disgraced comedian who reportedly used to ask people (women) if he could masterbate in front of them, has a new special out called "sorry." This is his second special (sold directly from his site). While I obviously don't condone Louie's actions (neither does he). He has apologized, and one more thing: When it comes to dark humor-he is the king. If you like dark humor (I'm not saying all scout leaders are pedophiles - I'm just saying it may be the really good leaders are) then you'll like this special. Louis has always been funny and did roundtables on comedy with people like Seinfeld and Chris Rock.
At the beginning of his special, you see Louis is now in a theater that is packed, and he walks out to a standing ovation. Cancelled? Only to people who don't like his comedy. Sure he's not getting movies or offers from networks, but he's able to sell his stuff to his fans on his site.
Speaking of Dark humor, I did watch Jimmy Carr - The Dark Material on Netflix. This was my first time checking out Jimmy. He's incredibly quick (working with the crowd) and pretty darn funny. He makes a point before he starts that a joke about something awful (rape) is not the same as the actual act. He spends the last 5-10 minutes of the special saying things he feels will get him "Cancelled."
Harvesting a Seed Six Years Later
When someone signs up at the School of Podcasting I send them a Loom video introducing myself, asking how they found me, asking them where they are in the podcast process, and making it really clear that I AM HERE TO HELP. I had someone who signed up for the School of Podcasting that let me know he found me six years ago. There is no judging here, but more just reporting that you plan a seed, and in some cases you harvest them six YEARS later.
New Month Coming Up
If you have something to host (a finished episode), then it's time for a media host. I always like to remind people that if you plan on using Libsyn, you can get a full free month using the coupon code sopfree (all one word). The BEST time to use this is on the 2nd of the month. Why? Because if you use this on January 2nd, 2022 you won't get the full month of January, so you won't have to pay until March. You will get the rest of January, and the full month of February.
WHAT IS DAVE WORKING ON IN 2022?
Well I'm still updating tutorials (Captivate is almost done), and I'm moving to the Teachable platform. The other thing I'm looking to do is cross-promote and partner with other podcasting related products (such as Podpage.). I already partner with another podcast (the Podcasters Roundtable). The idea is what products do I use, that fit podcasters, that I can then partner in a way that benefits both companies.
Priority number is is finish the SOP Update.
