PODCAST OBSERVATIONS
By Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting
WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO
My cousin was nice enough to give me his (non-covid) cold. I was pretty miserable through my entire vacation last week. Ugh. I'm almost better.
15 TIPS FROM THE BEATLES
In Episode 804 of the School of Podcasting, I shared how I watch all six hours of Get Back on Disney+. This is a documentary about the Beatles with lots of insights. I thought this content was good enough to recreate as a video on YouTube.
On the Podcast Rodeo Show I reviewed at show called The Skeptic Metaphysician and in it the host says, "I don't know how to introduce my guests." Um, figure it out as it's your job to get the audience excited that they are here. In a nutshell that episode is a CLASSIC case of burying the lead. You can listen or watch it.
SATURDAY TRAIN WRECK
I had an absolute TRAIN WRECK of an episode on Ask the Podcast Coach as I played with my new Shure SM7B and the Tascam Mixcast 4. The mic has a nice warm sounds (as expected some loved it, some hated it). The Mixcast 4 needed rebooting TWICE in my 90 minute episode. The second time I had to unplug it from the wall to get it to reboot. This is odd as I know people who own this unit and love. I'm still playing with it. I have a call with Tascam tomorrow (as they heard the episode - funny how they want to talk now, but I couldn't get a review unit before...). As for "which is better the Mixcast 4 or the Rodecaster it's a pretty close race. I will say I like the way I sound better on the Tascam, but I miss things like the countdown timer on the jingle buttons on the Rodecaster. I'm still working on an official opinion. This is going to be very much like the AT2100x vs Samson Q2u (almost the same thing)
ARE WE THERE YET?
On Your Podcast Consultant, I answered the question, "When Is Your Podcast Good Enough to Publish?"
PLEASE QUIT TWISTING THE KNIFE IN MY BACK
On Profit from Your Podcast I shared an episode titled, Are You Promoting Your Competition for Pennies? - The Blind Side of Crowd Funding where I share how people I know and trusted have started OPENLY COURTING POTENTIONAL LEADS right in front me in the chat room. (I don't know maybe start your own podcast to generate leads?). Between you an me, that hurts. This is one of those where "Not everyone thinks like you" moments. Just because I don't go to Pat Flynn's office hours and start promoting myself, doesn't mean others won't do it to you.
WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE
The O.C. White Podcast Boom Arm is $99 and OC White makes very expensive stuff and this is the first time they've really made something for podcasters. I'll be using it this Saturday.
Dopesick on Hulu. So good. The direct OPPOSITE of a Hallmark Christmas movie. Oh yeah, and OxyContin is still available.
I'm going to be (hopefully) working on two things in 2022.
- I want to be more consistent on YouTube. Consequently, I purchased TubeBuddy to make it a little easier.
- I want to get a better grasp on SEO. Consequently, I purchased SurferSEO (with a bonus learning curve) . You can copy and paste a post from your website and it will tell you what keywords to use to raise your score (think Yoast SEO on LOTS of Steroids). It also will audit your website. I'm trying to see if I need all the toys in this SEO Suite, or can I get by with Mangools which is almost affordable for podcasters.
COMING IN THE FUTURE
My Favorite Podcast
I do this every year. Let me know what your favorite podcast is (AND WHY) while your promote YOUR SHOW at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/question (I need your answer by 12/24/21)
SOP 4.0
I'm about 75% done with the new version of the School of Podcasting with all the updated tutorials.
Affiliate Page
This is kind of a "Duh" but I don't have a single page with ALL my affiliate links. I've had three people in the last two months ask me for one, so I'm going to make it. I kind of do at PodcastingResources.com but many of those are not affiliates. People are asking me, "where is your affiliate page."
Libsyn Toys
I saw the new social sharing tool in Libsyn (not available to the public yet - very cool and much better than the old one which was cool in the first place).
PLEASE BE SAFE
The holidays bring out the best and worst of people. Be kind, loving, compassionate, and respectful. Also, lock your doors.
