Hello ,
The Pros and Cons of Speaking
The fun part of being on the road is meeting new people, getting outside of the house, etc. The bad news is coming back to all the things that need to be done next week.
What I Learned This Week
One DEAL BREAKING feature of podcasting hosting is you HAVE TO give a way for people to leave your service (in podcasting it is called a 301 redirect - in English its a “Change of Address” that enables you to leave and take your audience with you. Right now the biggest offender and top of the “They should know better” is Kajabi. I spoke about this in a YouTube video. But I’m not here to complain about Kajabi, but to point out this is a rule for everything.
OH THIS LOOKS BETTER - YAY!
I moved my link tracking from bitly to rebrandly because they were better. Bitly made it easy to export my information and Rebrandly made it easy to import. However, in my excitement of getting more features, I didn’t check to see if how easy it would be to leave Rebrandly if sometime in the future I wanted to.
The answer is no. They make it hard (unless you are a programmer) to leave. This is why I’ve taken a break to write this newsletter instead of copying and pasting all my links and such into my new tool call Switchy (which has the reports I need and a whole lot more - and currently a lifetime deal).
I am in the process of copying and pasting 427 links. This will help me remember to always ask "What happens if I want to leave?"
WHO OWNS THE “ERNIE AND BERT” SHOW?
I worked with a client this week who does editing and had put his client’s show under his name and credit card. I explained that his client was not a podcaster then. They were the unpaid host of THEIR podcast. Never let someone get between your show and your audience. With this editor’s card on the hosting account, THEY OWNED YOUR SHOW. Nobody thinks about leaving something when they join, but it happens. People and life change. You hate to think about leaving, but in many cases, it is life (not you) that has changed.
So when you start something, take a few moments to figure out how you’re going to stop it and can take your show, your information with you.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH
Tomorrow is the last day to answer the question of the month and get some free exposure for your show. The question is what “Podcast best practice” are you ignoring and why (as we are all different). Go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/question by 10/29
WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE

NEW BOOK FROM AC/DC SINGER
I grew up in the 80’s and I loved hard rock. My very first concert was in 1978 and the line up was Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, AC/DC (Highway to Hell Tour), Journey, Thin Lizzy, and at the end some new band called “The Scorpions.” My first “Real Guitar” was a Gibson SG (like the guy from AC/DC).
So when I heard that Brian John (the lead singer of AC/DC) had a new book out called, “The Lives of Brian: a Memoir” and (and I love this) is also an audiobook read by the author. SOLD! I’m loving it so far, but the thing I love the most is his very thick accent. It’s an interesting glimpse into growing up in the 1950’s post-WWII.
